But why Masticate?

masticating juicer reviews

One of the biggest questions people often ask is “Why do I need a masticating juicer? Can’t I just use a centrifugal blender?” While you could, in theory, use a regular centrifugal blender, you’re not going to get much high-quality juice out of that.

Heated debate

The heat of a standard kitchen blender warms up the juice and kills the all-important nutrients and enzymes that you need for your health. It’s also not going to produce all that much juice.

If you’re looking to get into juicing for its incredible health benefits, a centrifugal blender is going to waste all of your hard work and make hardly any difference to your life.

If a centrifugal blender isn’t going to do the job, you’re going to need a masticating juicer (otherwise known as a cold press juicer).

The way forward

Instead of blending up all the fruit, warming it up, and damaging the nutrients and enzymes that you want to retain, masticating juicers work a lot more like your teeth, crushing up the fruit to press out as much juice as possible without heating it.

It helps to define masticate: this is the process of grinding something up with your teeth, basically chewing.

It’s also going to do things a lot more slowly and carefully, making sure that your juice doesn’t spend anywhere near as much time exposed to the air, the heat, or anything else best kept away from fresh juice. A good quality masticating juicer is going to make a world of difference to your juicing experience. Feel free to check out our masticating juicer reviews here. We have the best juicer 2019!

What are the benefits of masticated juice?

The benefits of juice have been known for thousands of years. There are historical records of people from over two thousand years ago mashing up fruit for its health benefits; the Dead Sea Scrolls talk about a Jewish tribe from about 150 BCE known as the Essenes crushing fruits such as figs and pomegranates for “strength and subtlety.”

History

This is the first known record of ancient juicing, but it’s far from the last. Ancient Indian Ayurvedic medical practitioners made a range of medicinal juices, while large parts of traditional herbalism depended on the benefits of chewed or crushed leaves and other plant parts.

Science

These health benefits aren’t just archaic, long discredited attempts at medicine by ancient peoples, however. There are documented, scientifically proven benefits to juicing, and masticating is the most advantageous approach.

Mimics the way you chew

Mimicking the motion of your jaws and teeth, a masticating juicing machine presses out the most nutrients possible from whichever fruits or plants you choose to put through it, ensuring that the resulting juice gives you the most energy and strength to keep your body and mind running in peak condition.

Health

As well as energy, the nutrients and enzymes that are pressed out of fruit by masticating juicers provide important boosts to your immune system. Raw fruits and vegetables contain a huge range of minerals, vitamins, and enzymes that can help you to fight off disease, and centrifugal blenders can overheat and destroy these.

Masticating juicers help to keep the fruits completely raw, ensuring that all of the vitamins and minerals make it straight out of the fruit and into your body, helping you to stay alert and healthy.

The best slow juicers takes all of the large nutrients from fruit and helps to break them down into easily absorbed parts that your body can use to their full extent. Juices are easy to digest, making it easier for your body to extract the important nutrients, vitamins, minerals, and enzymes without wasting energy.

The best juice extractors help to boost this, extracting more nutrient-rich juice from each piece of fruit than a traditional centrifugal blender, ensuring that you need less fruit to get the same level of health benefits from your juice. It’s also going to help you to get more fibre into your body from the juice, helping your digestive system to work at peak efficiency.

Juice lasts longer

Have you ever noticed how a cut piece of fruit goes brown and unpleasant when left out in the air? The same effects are going to happen to fresh fruit juice. Fortunately, masticating juicers help to reduce that a bit.

If you’re making juice with a centrifugal juicer, the juice is going to be spun around at high speed, creating a whole lot of heat in the process. This accelerates oxidation, the process which causes fruits to go brown and their nutrient value to reduce further. This reaction happens faster in warm conditions (which is why fruit lasts longer in the fridge), so the added heat of a centrifugal juicer only makes matters worse. Making centrifugally extracted juice only last up to a few hours even in the fridge.

The best cold press juicers, however, reduces the air contact time of your fresh juice and keeps it cool, reducing the chance of oxidation as far as possible. This means that cold press juice is going to last longer (up to 48hrs), making it easier to make a slightly larger batch of juice. Win! Our full post about Masticating vs Centrifugal Juicers

Quiet and stylish

Masticating juicers are quiet, unobtrusive pieces of kit. While centrifugal blenders spin at up to 1200 rpm, masticating juicers move at speeds closer to 60-100 rpm, helping them to stay quiet and out of the way during the juicing process.

You’re not going to wake up the rest of your family early in the morning by making cold press juice!

Can turn anything to a nutritious juice

The last major advantage of masticating juicers to consider is the question of what you can juice. If you try to run leaves such as kale or spinach through a centrifugal blender, you’re going to end up with fibrous bits clogging up your blender and getting into your drink, giving an unpleasant experience all round.

Masticating juicers are capable of smoothly extracting juices from thin leaves, helping you to fully reap the benefits of the incredible vitamin content of leafy vegetables without getting bits of fiber into your drink.

Differences between masticating juicers and centrifugal juicers

There are a number of important differences between big masticating juicers and centrifugal juicers, and in order to pick the very best juice extractor for your personal needs, it helps to understand exactly what’s going on with each type.

In short, centrifugal juicers are pretty much your standard home blender. Blades spin around, chopping up the fruit and crushing the juice out of the pulp by moving at high speed and moving the juice at a similar speed.

Masticating juicers, however, slowly crush the fruit with a motion similar to that of your teeth, pressing the juice out slowly through simple pressure. These different mechanisms create quite different juicing experiences and results.

The most obvious difference is that of speed. While centrifugal juicers tend to spin at approximately 1200 RPM, cold press juicers operate at speeds between 60 and 100 RPM. This means that they take longer to produce the juice, but do so far more quietly, disrupting your environment far less.

A high powered motor can overpower conversation or wake up family members early in the morning, as well as creating a high level of vibration as a side effect. It also means that the juice is kept cold, as the high speeds of a centrifugal juicer heat up the juice and kill some of the nutrients and enzymes in the fresh fruit.

The high speeds of centrifugal juicers also aerate the juice much more, bringing more of the fruit and liquid into contact with the air and facilitating oxidation, dulling the taste and health benefits of the juice.

As a result of the lower speed and temperature of commercial masticating juicers, the juice that they produce tends to taste fresher and to have more nutritional benefits. Yes, it’s a slower process, but the results are so much better that it’s worth taking that extra time.

It’s not even time that has to be spent staring at the juicer; masticating juicers can be easily loaded up and then left to get on with it while you go about your day, and the added time isn’t actually all that long.

Another important difference between centrifugal juicers and masticating juicing devices is visible in the range of ingredients that can be easily juiced. A centrifugal juicer will make short work of soft fruits and some tougher fruits but will struggle with more fibrous ingredients such as leafy greens and wheatgrass.

It’ll produce less juice, and there will usually be fibrous strands floating around in the liquid and clogging up the juicer.

Masticating juicers, however, can easily press juice from leafy greens, allowing you to enjoy the high levels of antioxidants found in vegetables such as kale and spinach without damaging the texture of your finished juice. This is an easy way to boost the nutritional value and health benefits of a juice without too much extra effort.
